Washington, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) Hundreds of demonstrators are today protesting at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota against the construction of a pipeline known as the Dakota Access Pipeline.

If the construction of the work goes ahead at a cost of 3.7 billion dollars, 470,000 oil barrels will be transported per day through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois.

According to those who support the project, the 1,930-kilometer pipeline would significantly reduce US dependence on foreign oil. Those opposing its construction argue that the pipeline will contribute to the destruction of culturally significant Native American land and would have a detrimental impact on the environment, threatening nearby water reservoirs and emitting green house gases.

On December 4th, a group of veterans are expected to join the demonstrators in order to prevent violence at the hands of police and the pipeline security personnel.
