Khamenei’s remarks came during a bilateral meeting with Maduro on the sidelines of the third summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, which started earlier on Monday in Tehran.

Khamenei, according to Iranian news agency IRNA, praised the stance of Maduro’s government and their desire to be free of U.S. pressure and turn Latin America into an “independent” place with its own “identity.”

“The wars today are actually a clash of wills and you can resolve problems by resistance, strengthening your will and using your country’s abundant capacities,” Khamenei said, according to FARS news agency.

“The United States aims to destroy the inspiring resistance of the Venezuelan nation and government through pressuring the country,” the Iranian leader asserted.

Meanwhile, Maduro stressed that Iran and Venezuela are “real friends with stable ties.”

Maduro emphasized that his country defends its national independence, since “imperialism creates chaos in the world to sabotage countries’ independence.”
