The OAS’ obsession with Venezuela

For years the Bolivarian Revolution has been in the firing line of the discredited Organization of American States (OAS), whose legacy of coups and interventions in the internal affairs of countries in the region which do not submit to Washington’s interests, continues to increase.

A ministerial meeting was held in Cancun on June 19, to approve a declaration regarding Venezuela, following an unsuccessful attempt made in May.

The initiative failed for a second time thanks to the position adopted by several Caribbean countries.

In this regard, Venezuela’s former Ambassador to the OAS Samuel Moncada, noted that it was the “dignity and principles of our sister nations of the Caribbean,” that led to this latest right wing defeat.

Meanwhile, the 47th General Assembly of the OAS, an organization that Fidel described as “a hateful instrument” of the United States, also took place in Cancun from June 20-21. During the event the government of Nicolás Maduro came under attack from a bloc of right wing countries, which serve as puppets for the United States and even attempted to include a resolution against the nation in the Final Declaration.

As such, the General Assembly agenda was high jacked as these nations attempted to discredit Venezuela.
As a result, important issues for the region presented by the South American nation failed to be addressed, including opposition to the building of a wall on the border between the U.S. and Mexico, and the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Accords.

Once again the OAS was exposed as an organization which only responds to the interests of the United States, hence Cuba’s decision never to return, and recent steps taken by Venezuela to withdraw from the bloc.

During the meeting former Foreign Minister of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, continued to defend changes underway in her country and recalled how the U.S. government, with the support of right wing member states, is using the OAS to intervene in Venezuela.

Rodríguez also denounced the conduct of the organization’s Secretary General Luis Almagro, who called for acts of violence in Venezuela. “(Almagro) promotes, participates in, and leads the directorate of the civil war in Venezuela, which I strongly denounce.”

Finally, Rodríguez, who is running for a seat in the Constituent Assembly, stated: “We are leaving victorious and that’s just how we will continue. We will never return!... (...) We will never return to an organization used for submission (...) we leave with great pride, with the flags of Bolívar flying high, this is our last participation in the OAS.”
