D'Escoto passed away yesterday at the age of 84 after a long illness, although in an unexpected way, Vice President Rosario Murillo said after announcing the news.

After a successful recovery of his health, and unexpectedly, Father Miguel said goodbye to all of us and came to accompany us in fulfilling the aspirations and the dreams of our people, Murillo read in a government press release.

Expressions of condolences immediately began to arrive from different parts of the world, as well as of the national territory.

'He dedicated his whole life to serve the people, and promote a different state of affairs in the world, he did it as a foreign minister, and as a president of the United Nations Assembly,' Telemaco Talavera said on behalf of the university community.

Talavera, who is the president of the National Council of Universities and presidential adviser for educational issues, said Nicaragua is proud of having children such as Father D'Escoto, of whom -he said- his principles, legacy and conviction, a banner of struggle, life and peace, will remain.

Messages of respect, condolences and pain arrived from Ecuador, Venezuela, El Salvador and Mexico, the UN General Assembly and world personalities, for the lamentable death .

Known as the foreign minister of national dignity, D'Escoto chaired the United Nations General Assembly between 2008 and 2009.
