British music to take over Havana

Once again, the Union Jack colors will take over Havana from March 18 to 27 to offer a sample of British music in various places throughout the city.

Tim Cole, British Ambassador to Cuba, announced in a press conference several major activities of the event’s program including photo exhibitions, dance, film screenings, a discussion space and anticipated concerts by English and local artists.

Among the main proposals during this first British Music Week in Havana stands out the exhibition El rock en la fotografía: visión de Jill Furmanovsky (Rock music in photography: Jill Furmanovsky’s vision) on Wednesday 23 at the Fototeca de Cuba at 6pm.

Furmanovsky is an outstanding photographer that for more than three decades has worked from within the world of rock, taking pictures of several of its most renowned exponents. On her files there are acclaimed bands like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Ramones, The Police, The Sex Pistols, Oasis, and other artists such as Bob Marley, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan.

It also stands out the performances of popular Dj Auntie Flo, to perform on March 26 at night in the Balneario Universitario, and on March 27 at Fabrica de Arte Cubano. In the first of these presentations Auntie Flo will be accompanied by the Cuban DJs Kike Wolf, Wicky del Vedado and Reitt. All this is also possible thanks to the support of the National Laboratory of Electroacoustic Music.

A discussion group titled The British music will take place on March 23 at 3:00 p.m. at Submarino Amarillo center. It will mainly deal with the presence of this artistic expression in Cuba and panelists will be Juan Camacho, Guille Vilar and Joaquín Borges Triana.

But undoubtedly, the crown jewel will be the concert by The Rolling Stones on March 25. The legendary British rock band will perform in the areas close to Havana’s Ciudad Deportiva in what so many already consider a historic event.

Under the slogan Music is Great Britain, the first Brit Music Week will be an opportunity for all Cubans to enjoy a selection of good art, and mainly, the music created in this European nation.
