The semi-autobiographical book tells the story of a US lieutenant who falls in love with an English nurse while serving in Italy during World War One.

Hemingway himself served in Italy, was wounded and fell in love with a nurse.

His book became a film and a Broadway play after its publication in 1929. The UK version will open in Lancaster in October, before going on tour.

The play is being staged by theatre company Imitating the Dog, who are known for their use of film and projection.

Director Andrew Quick said: "Imitating the Dog will approach Hemingway's narrative through the company's unique visual style using projection techniques to create a magical and highly accessible version of the novel for all audiences."

A Farewell To Arms will make its debut at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster and then visit Doncaster, Ipswich, Salford, Birmingham and Brighton.
