John Lasseter, the maker of the original feature, will return as director of the latest installment that will open a new chapter in the lives of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

The movie has been conceived by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to, or surpasses, what’s gone before,” said Lasseter.

“‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie,” he explained.

“But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie -- and I wanted to direct it myself.”

The writers Rashida Jones and Will McCormack also joined the project, which is being produced by Galyn Susman.

The three films of the franchise raked in close to a total of $2 billion at the box office worldwide.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen lent their voices in the original version for Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively.

The film will arrive in theaters June 16, 2017.
