Boasting global prestige and great national significance, the John F. Kennedy Memorial Centre for the Performing Arts just made an exciting announcement for an upcoming festival that will be the first of its kind the US. In May 2018, the prominent centre will host a cultural festival dedicated to Cuban art and its many influences. In an attempt to reach out to the nation’s great talent, the event will comprise a wide plethora of performances and will welcome renowned Cuban artists.

Cuba has had an important impact on US culture since the 19th century. Alicia Adams, the festival curator, expressed her excitement on paying this tribute to Cuban arts. Adams stated that the island’s artistic work has been influencing American culture for centuries:

“One of the things I’m trying to connect is the fact that the United States has Cuban music and Cuban arts in its DNA. Looking at all of that is what’s fascinating to me.”

In this spirit, the festival “Artes de Cuba: From the Island to the World” is determined to show the globe Cuba’s amazing talent during the two-week event, which will take place from 8th to 20th May. In addition to music, dance and theatre, the festival will showcase visual arts and films of Cuban and Cuban Americans and feature over a dozen free events to lure in the curious art-loving public. There also will be a free Family Day on May 12 and eight free performances on the Millennium Stage.

Moreover, Adams insisted on the idea of the festival looking to bring as much of Cuba’s multi-cultural essence as possible. The two-week festival will feature nearly 50 showcasing the ethnic influences of Africa, South American, Europe and the Caribbean. Adams added:

“We’re doing our best to bring as much of Cuba here as we can. It’s a very dynamic place to be. It’s bursting with energy.”

Some top-of-the-line guests include singer Omara Portuondo, popular salsa and timba band Los Van Van, the Malpaso Dance Company and the award-winning Argo Teatro. Among the numerous events will be a piano marathon featuring jazz artists Aldo Lopez-Gavilan and Jorge Luis Pacheco, drummer Yissy Garcia and her band, Bandancha, and multi-genre musician Aymee Nuviola with Ed Calle. There will be exhibitions of visual artists Roberto Diago and Emilio Perez, a mini-film fest commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Havana Film Festival and a multimedia installation from the American Museum of Natural History.

Once the festival has concluded, Cuban art will continue to shine across the world with Cuba’s National Ballet. The company will begin a six-day run on 29th May, performing “Don Quixote” and “Giselle.”
