University of New Mexico’s Latin American and Iberian Institute leads a tour to Cuba

The University of New Mexico Latin American and Iberian Institute offers a unique opportunity to visit the nation of Cuba to discover the diversity of the island and its religious beliefs and practices. The 7-day non-denominational tour is scheduled from Feb. 7-14, 2015.

An information session is set for Monday, Aug. 11, at 6 p.m. in the conference room of the Latin American and Iberian Institute, located at 801 Yale Blvd. NE.

Visiting churches, cemeteries and exploring the UNESCO- designated World Heritage Site of Habana Vieja, participants will meet community members and dialogue with both seminary students and religious leaders. The tour, led by UNM Professor Emeritus Nelson Valdés, a well-known Cuban scholar, is open to anyone, of any denomination with an interest in religion regardless of background or affiliation. A native Cuban, Valdez has led many trips to Cuba between 1980 and 2004, and is well acquainted with the island.

Those interested in participating should attend the information session and or visit the trip website where they can download the trip flyer and information sheet  containing information on the itinerary and costs. Participants should complete and send the registration form  by Nov. 21.
