Thomas Donohue, chairman of the US Chamber of Commerce, showed on January 14th in Washington his optimism before the promising and rising economical activities with Cuba.

In his annual speech on the US perspective for 2016, at the headquarters of the group of businessmen, the officer forecasted the US growing nearly 2%.

He also regarded as “very significant” the increased commercial activity with Cuba since President Barack Obama and Raul Castro announced the beginning of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between US-Cuba, made official on July 20th.

He also admitted “there are still important activities that must be solved” and was skeptical about the Congress ability to legislate something to remove the economical, commercial, and financial blockade imposed to the island since 1962.

Donohue, one of the most active voices in favor of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the US, visited Cuba in 1999 and 2004, when he urged the need to go step by step in this new chapter in the relationship.

By the end of September 2015, the US Chamber of Commerce announced the creation of the US-Cuba Business Council with the goal of “building up a strong and strategic commercial relation” between the two countries.

In 2016, several delegations of US congressmen, senators, and business have traveled to Havana to explore new commercial opportunities, above all, in the agricultural field.

The Cuban government holds that the US economical, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by Washington to Havana is the main obstacle for the normalization of relationship between the two countries.
