The workshop is the perfect place for beginners and researchers to exchange viewpoints on subjects such as conservation and natural history of Cuban cactaceous plants.

The Cuban Cacti Conservation Program began in 2005 as part of the conservation project of the Melocactus actinacanthus specie, symbol used in the program logo. It has been coordinated by the National Botanical Garden´s Conservation Group, with the support of different institutions in the country.

According to the Organizing Committee, the Program goal is to contribute to the conservation and management of these plants in Cuba. Most of these plants are highly sensitive to changes in their habitat and have different threaten levels due to their limited distribution and small population size. In the last ten years, the conservation actions have been focused particularly on the study of some cacti species.

Besides, this Cuban Cacti´s Conservation Workshop will tackle subjects on conservation, ecology, morphology, anatomy, taxonomy, crops, and propagation, living collection, ex-situ handling and ethnobotany. Dissertations could be sent until March 20th.

Cuba has the largest diversity of Cacti in the Caribbean, with 50 species, 33 of them are endemic. The presence here of emblematic Leptocereus, Dendrocereus, and Consolea, highlights the importance of Cuba in the study of cactaceous.
