Sustainable development, and applied science for the benefit of the economy and society, are policies of the Revolution from its early years, already consolidated in pursuit of the general knowledge.

That strategic thinking, led by Fidel Castro, channelled the important vision of the role of science in the advancement of the country, a scenario unthinkable before 1959.

The triumph of January 1st, Cuba had about a million illiterate people, including hundreds of thousands of children without teachers, that neither dreamed of going to school, and were not backed by the government or national institutions.

In these circumstances, the Literacy Campaign, which, among other aspects, the thinking function to develop the science in the Greater one of the Antilles.

Then created schools everywhere, and with them the light of the teaching and knowledge shone like a beacon in the entire national territory, education ceased to be a luxury to become a law, in a possibility that came to all equally, and that made possible the specialization and creation of scientific centers and a considerable number of researchers.

Today, security and food and energy sovereignty, the prevention and mitigation of the effects of climate change and other natural phenomena, the sustainable use of the resources available and the preservation of ecosystems for future generations constitute priority for workers in the sector.

Almost three decades of established the Day of the Cuban Science, the picture gave a resounding turnaround thanks to the illustrated guide of Fidel and the efforts of our scientists, who for the benefit of society are driving the technological innovation, increase the human capital and are strengthened at the national level.

This is demonstrated in all socio-economic branches, in addition to the international collaboration in the Health, Education, Sports, and other fronts, in which transcend borders to ratify the decisive role of science in the course of the nation.
