The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba (MINREX) rejected today the statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recognized Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel.

In an official statement, the Cuban foreign ministry expressed its deepest concern and rejection of the unilateral statement made by President Trump, which represents 'a serious and flagrant violation of the UN Charter, the International Law and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations'.

The MINREX statement indicates that this measure taken by the Government of the United States attempts to change the historic status of Jerusalem and violates the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people and the Arab and Islamic countries.

It also said that this action will have serious consequences for the stability and security in the Middle East, will further increase tensions in that region and halt any effort aimed at resuming peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

The MINREX urged the Security Council to fulfill its duty, envisaged by the UN Charter on international peace and security, and make the necessary decisions, while asking Israel the immediate halt the occupation of Palestinian territories.

'The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterates that Cuba will continue to support a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on a two-State solution that allows the Palestinians the right to self-determination and to have a State independent and sovereign, with its capital city in East Jerusalem, according to the borders defined before 1967,' said the document.
