The Foreign Ministers of Cuba and Australia, Bruno Rodríguez and Julie Bishop, respectively, signed here a Memorandum on Understanding on Regular Diplomatic Meetings, with the objective to promote and strenghten bilateral cooperation.

During a meeting with his Cuban counterpart at the host building of the Cuban Foreign Affairs Ministry in Havana, Bishop assured there were different chances for trade and investments between Cuba and Australia.

Bishop said there were great opportunities for businesses, in fields like tourism, sports, mining, energy, agriculture, infrastructure and education.

The Australian government receives with approval the economic reforms of Cuba, especially its opening to direct foreign investment, added Bishop, who is making her first visit to the Caribbean island.

The chief of the Australian diplomacy expressed her desire for the Australian companies to find here good business opportunities.

On this matter, the Cuban Foreign Ministry stated that there are areas with potential to develop connections that he regarded as 'historical', and said that the collaboratión with Australia was productive.

Rodriguez also greeted the Australian support for the incorporation and work of Cuba as a dialogue partner of the Forum of the Pacific Islands, to which Havana entered, in 2013.

Cuba and Australia established diplomatic relations in January 1989, a period which includes their common positions on issues such as climate change, the defense of freedom of trade and navigation, and other topics.
