Clarke, a daughter of Jamaican immigrants and a legislator in the ninth district of New York, called on her colleagues in the House and Senate to unite in an effort to restore the 'practical and common sense approach' of former President Barack Obama (2009 -2017) towards the island.

Obama worked to transcend past mistakes and build a future defined by the common interests and aspirations of the United States and Cuba, Clarke told content-provider Caribbean Media Corporation.

According to the congresswoman, collaboration on family issues, dealing with narcotics and investment offer enormous benefits to the peoples of both nations.

Now Trump wants to undermine those achievements and turn them into a policy of mutual mistrust, she added, referring to the announcement made by the president last Friday in Miami, Florida.

In Miami, the head of the White House signed an executive order that reverses some of the advances made by the previous administration, mainly regarding the trips of Americans to the Caribbean island, business, and trade.
