An agreement on the restoration of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Cuba at the level of the ambassadors was signed on Friday in NY by the two countries’ permanent representatives at the United Nations.

Cuba today reestablished diplomatic relations with Morocco, which had been broken in 1980, following the expulsion of the Cuban ambassador from Rabat, dpa reported.

Both governments re-established their diplomatic relations drawn by the mutual will to develop friendly and cooperative relations between both nations on the political, economic, cultural fields, among others.

The agreement, written in Spanish, English and Arabic, became effective immediately after it was signed by the two sides. It was the Moroccan monarch’s first visit to the country since his enthronement in 1999 and the first ever made by a Moroccan king.

This decision is part of the implementation of royal instructions for a proactive diplomacy, open on new partnerships and new geographic spaces, the Moroccan foreign ministry said in a statement.

The opening of a Moroccan embassy in Cuba and a Cuban embassy in Morocco will enable the two countries to reestablish the channels of dialogue and work for the betterment of the interests of their respective peoples.

Moroccan diplomacy, spearheaded by King Mohammed VI, has proven its efficiency and capacity to adapt to the new world order and its new geopolitical challenges. “It will steer away from outdated and petty calculations and ideologies”, said the news agency.
