Cuban Deputy Warns of Possible Catastrophe in Haiti
The passing of any tropical storm or hurricane in Haiti will be a real catastrophe resulting in many deaths, warned on Tuesday Cuban Parliament deputy Jose Rubiera, now head of the Cuban Meteorology Institute's Weather Forecasts Department Tuesday.
Rubiera spoke at the Cuban Parliament International Relations Committee and said that these phenomena were real tragedies for Haiti over the last few years.
That Caribbean country is considered one of the poorest countries in the world, and it recently suffered an earthquake causing more than 222,000 dead people, 300,000 wounded and almost 1.5 damaged people.
Rubiera also referred to the deforestation problems of Haiti, a country with 98 percent of its territory without trees, and to the large number of people living in precarious conditions.
"If there is no real cooperation among the countries helping Haiti, there will be no salvation for the nation," said deputy Oden Marichal.
Deputies at the Havana Convention Center at the 5th period of Sessions of the 7th Legislature received wide-ranging information on Haitiâ?Ös current situation.
The investigator Boris Luis Rodriguez spoke of the geographical, political, economic and social features of Haiti.
